Poutine.
Being the first time that such a wonderous combination of fries, gravy and cheese curds have ever graced my palate, I thought it was bloggable. A recently opened restaurant in the Fairbanks Area, Harley’s Diner MC, has become the first Alaskan eatery to offer this tasty Canadian treat - although, not without a healthy (no pun intended.. well, maybe) dose of warning labels all over the menu. Yes, warning labels.
I’ve never seen a restaurant suggest that you actually NOT eat something on their menu - describing it as lacking sustainable nutrition and suggesting that patrons only have it once in a while. Yet, directly afterward, they do mention that its oddball combination is possibly the best comfort food in the world.
And that last comment, along with the others, I would most heartedly agree with. Not only do my veins still feel saturated with salt and gravy but I am content with the fact that I probably won’t need to eat today, easily gathering my daily caloric intake for the next seven days on one hefty plate of poutine.
Even if the combination sounds sickening and potentially awkward, the Canadians have finally stumbled onto something worth noticing. Thank you for Poutine, our brothers to the nor…east.

Aurora / Busy Weeks

Posted by gimpi

Didn’t go to Starvation Gulch this year at UAF - mainly because I have so many years before that it’s just lost it’s flair, but I am extremely glad that I didn’t go - and at that, that I didn’t stay at the Arctic Noise Symphony show that I was at - because I got to see some awesome early season Aurora.
I’ve never been one to “ooh-and-ahh” over the aurora too much cause I’ve seen it so many times - to boot, I’ve never been one to needlessly aim my camera skyward that often either. Most of the time it’s pretty much regular old green - not that extraordinary - and at that, you might be lucky to see one thin strip. Not this night - and seeing that I hadn’t taken any in a very, very long time, managed to have my tripod and digital with me, I said what the heck, might as well.
Work has actually been pretty busy lately so I haven’t had much time at all to work on posting - as soon as I get home I just want to rest. Hopefully I can find some more time here soon to post as the pictures are starting to mound up. Deanna’s going southward this weekend to visit her family - I bought her a ticket to fly down to Kenai because she hasn’t seen them for a while and driving down there takes so long that a weekend trip is almost not even worth the hassle - this might cost a bit more but it gives her two and a half days almost down there. So, I’ll probably be completely free this weekend, rotting my brain in front of the TV playing games. We’ll see!

Whosh Week 17

Posted by gimpi

Went to see the OB doctor today and got another sound sample of the baby’s heart beat - now we’re into our 17th week and the baby’s fine! We scheduled our Week 20 ultrasound and so in another two weeks or so that’ll be online as well. We’re starting to plan baby showers and where we’re going to have registries around town - Deanna’s dad is working on the crib and high chair and aside from that, we’re slowly stumbling around to getting all we need. Enjoy the baby’s heart beat! (MP3 format)

$1654.00

Posted by gimpi

Woot! The Alaskan PFD will be making each Alaskan (well, those that remembered to apply for it) $1654.00 richer over the next few months depending on how they applied. Damn it feels good to be frozen 8 months out of the year.

Nike Missle Site Trip

Posted by gimpi

This is from about two weeks ago when my dad and I ventured onto the back of Fort Wainwright near Eielson AFB - I’ve been wanting to go up there for quite some time and finally did. For those that don’t know, there were several Nike Missle sites throughout the state - Nike sites brought surface-to-air mass deployment options for Cold War era defense - and that did mean nuclear warheads. Although I know little about these sites, I am actively trying to read up on more of the history associated with it. Once again, just like the other work I do with the local mines, this is a little-known part of local history - heck, national history. Most youngsters don’t know that these sites were all over the US - and at times, in their own backyards. I’d like to find a site that was a little less stripped than this one, but apparently the local ones here are pretty sparce.
I’m hoping to post some more pics via the gallery - we’ll see how long that takes.
*Updated* Here’s the link to the rest of the pics.
